Steps to prevent cyber-bullying

Updated: Mar 17, 2020

Living in this high-tech era with the birth of the internet, things have become easier, but at the same time, this fictional web-world has also become more powerful and dangerous. Every sword has two edges, making good use of the internet and social media can be beneficial, however, abusing the power of the internet can be fatal. As a victim myself, I humbly suggest a few ways that could help to prevent cyber-bullying:

P.S.: Instagram (IG) is having this message "create don't hate", supporting to end cyber-bullying.

Create Don't Hate” is a message of empowerment for Instagram's community and a reminder that Instagram wants the platform to be a safe, supportive place for everyone,” the company said in a press statement.

Ways to prevent cyber-bullying:

  1. NEVER-EVER publicly create or share post(s) that may contain any negative statements directly or indirectly about anyone in any forms.

  2. Please DO NOT engage in any negative posts or statements. Especially those that you are unclear of. This is also to protect you from getting into troubles (i.e. a lawsuit).

  3. IF there is a suspected bullying case, the best solution is always to approach the appropriate authority (i.e. police) or pursue legal actions. Majority afraid of doing so, but finding the authority is the best way to help you. DO NOT afraid to talk to them! I am glad I was being trained in safe-guarding when I was in the UK. I seriously think this skill is a must in this society.

Please do remember that we are not the authorities, not an inspector or officer who have the rights to carry out any investigations on anyone. Again, if you felt that you want to clear your doubts ON that post, refer to the authority (if you have that rights to obtain that information, then they would tell you). Please do not continuously harass or trespass that victim (the name that was being publicly used to accuse them on doing something).

These steps might look simple to you, but whatever I had experienced tell me that they are not being carried out. So, rather than complaining about the simplicity of these few fundamental steps, we should insist on the importance of carrying out these steps in preventing cyber-bullying. IF each and every one of us can comply with them, this world would definitely be a better world.

To the victims:

Be strong! I know that you aren't like any of them who would do things without considering the consequences. We CAN always seek help from appropriate authorities or to take any legal actions. It is our basic human rights to seek help when we need them and to be frank, the authorities' job is to take good care of us. So don't be afraid! They have our back. They are the one who is hurting us and we should NOT let the evils win!

We fight for justice! We fight for humanities! And, we also fight for our own! Surviving this hard time, we are then the survivals who have an inspiring story to tell! We can proudly tell everyone we handle things in a very professional way and we are handling it with wisdom!

Please note that cyber-bullying can be fatal (one of the major reasons that people commit suicide). It can even cause PTSD or have serious effects on one's mental health. It is a Silent killer, so please give your time and love!

Lastly, I am aware that I did not discuss anything about education or even the roles of teachers, parents or even ways that the authorities could carry out in order to fight against cyber-bullying. I still believe that by focusing on such simple steps, we can help preventing a case of cyber-bullying to happen in a very straightforward manner. We then can further discuss the other roles that could help play in these situations.

Please share around to help fighting to stop cyber-bullying or even ANY FORMS of bullying.
